O.F.F. #9 “DREAMS ARE ANOTHER ART!” New Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche Video / Binger Lab Amsterdam / 10K to go!

I grew up with the model: “no pain, no gain”. These values came from my hard working Jewish parents and also, of course, from sports. The basic idea is that survival is a struggle and you have to be willing to suffer to get what you want. It’s a great model to have if you want to succeed as an independent filmmaker. My thirty years surviving the film business is a testament to how well this motto really works. But I must say that the reality of the artist’s struggle year after year can really wear you down. You don’t even realize you’re tired, until someone offers you a chair to rest your weary feet.

Well, being at the Binger Lab in Amsterdam has been just that for me. I am being taken care of for three months. I’ve been offered all sorts of fabulous development courses for my new film project and have been surrounded by a group of talented international filmmakers and a loving staff. They even have an extraordinary chef named Joop, who cooks exquisite cuisine for us every day at lunch. I find myself crying a lot, noticing all sorts of dark corners I forgot I had, learning how to play again, and being really grateful that for three months I can hang up my fighting gloves and just receive some nourishment in the form of artistic mentoring.

Of course the Binger Lab too is under huge threat. The Dutch government completely slashed the Binger’s funding last year, and they are now reorganizing and reducing their programs. It will continue to exist, but in a much leaner, meaner form, partnered with the Rotterdam Film Festival. They, like all of us, will begin to depend on private philanthropy to survive. They will have to jump in and swim in the harsh waters, which American filmmakers and artists have been swimming in for decades.

So, while I am being pampered in Amsterdam, I have not forgotten reality. I still have to keep up the good fight to release MY REINCARNATION in America and around the world. We have raised an amazing $40,000 for the USA Radio and TV Press Tour for film protagonist, Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche. We have nearly reached the finish line goal of $50,000 to allow the American press to speak directly to one of the last living great spiritual Masters, trained in Tibet in the Buddhist Spiritual Tradition.

For those of you who don’t understand what this means let me take a moment to explain: due to the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, the great Buddhist spiritual system was destroyed. Almost all the Teachers remaining in Tibet were killed. In Tibet, the Buddhist Teachings were forbidden.  Only those who escaped carried the knowledge and the complex lineage of Tibetan Buddhism into the world. Now many of those Masters trained in Tibet, are aging or have already passed away. There are only a few leaders left, one of which is Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche. That is why it is so important to make sure the press can speak directly to him about the film and the subject of Tibetan culture and spirituality.
